Stefanie Carusi
Technical Officer Biodiversity Sampling
Stefanie Carusi works in the Seedbank and Conservation team at the Australian PlantBank, based at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan.
With a Bachelor of Environmental Science, majoring in environmental systems, and a Diploma in Conservation and Land Management, Stefanie's venture into the realm of conservation was shaped by her childhood experiences with her grandmother, exploring her garden and discovering the wonders of nature together.
In her role, Stefanie spearheads critical projects such as the Saving our Species seed collection targets and the Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan seed collection. Armed with practical planning skills, and adept at relationship building and communication, she ensures the success of these ventures.
A typical day for Stefanie involves checking germination trials, processing seed collections and other genetic samples, and organising field trips for seed collection, all while revelling in the diversity of plant and seed characteristics. Her dedication to preserving threatened and endangered species is what motivates her in her work.
Among the vast array of plant species, Stefanie holds a special affinity for the majestic Angophora costata (commonly known as the Sydney Red Gum or Smooth-barked Apple), renowned for its striking beauty and remarkable resilience, thriving in even the most challenging of environments.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Stefanie finds fulfilment in exploring unique and special locations across New South Wales for seed collection, allowing her to merge her love for the outdoors with her conservation efforts.
