Michael Elgey is a dedicated and experienced horticulturist with a broad knowledge base in conservation and Botanic Gardens management.

With a career that spans various botanic gardens in New South Wales and Queensland, as well as Herbaria, Michael brings a wealth of expertise to his role.

Formally educated and trained in horticulture, Michael has completed an apprenticeship in Horticulture, earned a Diploma in Horticulture, and obtained a Bachelor's degree in biology, majoring in environmental ecology.

Michael oversees the operational deliverables related to horticulture, arboriculture, green-keeping, nursery production, landscape projects, invasive species management, and conservation-restoration initiatives at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan. His career path in horticulture has been a dynamic one. Starting as an Apprentice, where he spent much time on the grounds, he has steadily risen through the ranks to his current leadership position. His role now entails providing support and guidance to his teams, ensuring they have all they need to maintain the breath-taking living collection that is the Garden.

One of Michael's favourite aspects of his job is its variety. Botanic Gardens are ever-evolving, and Michael and his teams embrace the challenge of constantly improving and enhancing the site. He takes immense pride in witnessing the Garden’s transformation and the continuous growth and development of his staff, which directly translates into the improvement of the living collections and site presentation.

For his commitment and hard work, he has received an Australia Day Achievement Award presented by the former Governor-General of Australia, Ms. Quentin Bryce AC – a testament to his outstanding contributions to the industry.

Michael's interest in the natural world was ignited during his childhood in western Sydney. Regular camping and hiking trips with his father and brothers in the Blue Mountains exposed him to the diverse wonders of plant life. He also cherishes memories from his childhood, such as popping flower buds of unopened fuchsias, pulling apart camellia flowers, and fondly climbing the large lemon tree in his parent's garden as a toddler. Exploring various habitats and spending time in his family's garden inspired him to pursue a career outdoors, making his role a perfect fit for his lifelong interests.

Michael’s passionate leadership ensures that the Garden thrives and evolves, providing a beautiful and enriching experience for all visitors.
