Matthew Laurence, PlantClinic Manager, has a wealth of expertise in plant pathology, arboriculture, and molecular biology.

He is a dedicated professional with a wealth of expertise in plant pathology, arboriculture, and molecular biology. With a passion for diagnosing and researching plant diseases, Matthew plays a vital role in the PlantClinic diagnostic and research program.

Growing up between Perth and a hobby farm near the Porongurup National Park in Western Australia, Matthew's upbringing instilled in him a deep connection to nature and a fascination with biodiversity.

After finishing high school, Matthew's academic journey took him on an exciting path of discovery. Initially torn between literature, history, and biology, he embarked on a gap year that transformed into a three-year adventure through northern Western Australia, Indonesia, and Europe. It was during this time that Matthew realised his true calling in biology, particularly in the field of plant science and he completed an undergraduate degree in Biology/Ecology at the University of London.

Inspired by his interests in history, plant science, mycology, agriculture, and evolution, in 2006 Matthew pursued a PhD opportunity at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney's PlantClinic. Under the guidance of supervisors, Dr. Brett Summerell, Dr. Edward Liew, and Prof. Lester Burgess, Matthew delved into the role of natural ecosystems in the evolution of fungal plant pathogens. His research involved extensive travel across Australia's national parks, collecting specimens and gaining invaluable field experience.

In this role, he manages the day-to-day operations of the diagnostic laboratory, develops new diagnostic assays, provides research support, liaises with clients, and conducts fieldwork in remote locations. After completing his PhD in 2013, Matthew pursued further studies and obtained a Graduate Certificate in Arboriculture from the University of Melbourne.

Matthew aims to focus on plant pathology in amenity horticulture, an area often overlooked in research, to provide valuable insights and solutions for maintaining the health of ornamental plants.

With his extensive knowledge, hands-on experience, and unwavering passion for plant pathology, Matthew continues to make invaluable contributions to the field, ensuring the health and resilience of plants in both natural and urban environments.
