Matt Coyne is the Senior Arborist at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

With extensive experience in arboriculture, Matt is tasked with overseeing the Garden’s tree care program, including regular inspections, pruning, planting, and the safe removal of trees. He also provides expert advice to other departments on tree protection for various events and building development projects.

Matt's career in arboriculture began with his early days as a climbing arborist. Educated at TAFE NSW, he holds a Diploma of Arboriculture and Certificate 2 and 3 from TAFE NSW. He has further specialised with certifications in various tree risk assessment methodologies, including those from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

A typical workday for Matt might start with a team toolbox talk, outlining tasks for the day, followed by hands-on work in the garden and concluding with office duties and onsite meetings. This blend of fieldwork and administrative responsibilities allows him to enjoy both the outdoors and structured project management.

Matt's professional achievements include receiving the Bruce Macleod Memorial Award Certificate II Arboriculture, and the Highest Achievement Award for Certificate III in Arboriculture. One of his proudest moments was being appointed as the Senior Arborist at the Garden, a role that allows him to contribute significantly to the conservation and beautification of one of Sydney's most beloved landmarks.

His career choice was influenced by his desire to work outdoors and engage in meaningful physical work that also involves being part of a community that values nature and teamwork. Beyond his work life, Matt regularly competes in and volunteers at tree climbing competitions. He also enjoys biking, camping, and spending time in the ocean, embracing activities that keep him connected to nature.
