Mark Kilpatrick is the Senior Horticulturalist responsible for overseeing the Middle Gardens Precinct at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

With nearly three decades in the horticulture industry, Mark's journey began in New Zealand, where he completed his Certificate IV in Amenity Horticulture and a Diploma of Plant Collections Management at Otago Polytechnic and then later obtained an Advanced Diploma in Management from St George TAFE.

His interests encompass many tropical plants, particularly in the Bromeliaceae family, along with a fondness for English cottage and French parterre gardens.

Responsible for expanding plant collections and pursuing conservation initiatives, Mark collaborates closely with donors and other botanical institutions to secure endangered and undescribed plant species for the Garden's Living Collections.

Mark's typical day starts with coffee and a team meeting, followed by overseeing the routine maintenance of horticultural displays, plant collections, and administrative tasks. His role bridges the work of horticulturists and supervisors, ensuring efficient garden operations and fostering a collaborative work environment.

Mark finds immense satisfaction in observing the evolution of garden beds and plant collections as plants mature and new species are introduced and trialed. This hands-on experience fuels his enthusiasm for discovering innovative techniques that enhance current horticultural practices.

Favourite plants like Tillandsias (air plants) and the versatile Buxus genus (evergreen shrubs often used for hedging and topiary) highlight Mark's appreciation for both botanical diversity and structural garden design.

His career choice was influenced by early experiences working in a market garden on weekends and school holidays, igniting a lifelong passion for plants and the natural environment.

Beyond horticulture, Mark enjoys cooking, movies, and pursuing his passion for fly fishing. He also takes pride in mentoring emerging horticulturalists and enjoys witnessing their success in the industry.
