Chris Cole has over two decades of experience and is an expert in landscape design and construction, display horticulture and permaculture. He begun his career at the Australian Botanic Garden as a Horticulturist in the Nursery in 1997.

Chris’ passion for horticulture was sparked during his youth, when he spent extended periods of time in the Australian bush. He went on to complete an Associate Diploma in Parks Management at Ryde TAFE and started his career at Botanic Gardens of Sydney as a Horticulturist in 1997. He then worked as the Chief Propagator at Alice Springs Desert Park before returning to the Gardens in 2006.

As a a Supervisor Horticulture at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan, Chris is responsible for a variety of projects, including horticultural planning, thematics and landscaping. A highlight for him was the landscaping installations completed around the National Herbarium of New South Wales.

There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ workday for Chris, with no two days alike. This variety is his favourite aspect of the job, and he takes immense enjoyment in the creative aspect of his work. He also loves working with a diverse group of people and he holds the people who work at the Gardens in high regard.

When it comes to plants, Chris prefers the Proteaceae family, but he admires all of the remarkable diversity found within our unique Australian flora.
