What’s in a name?

You can’t miss the big Eucalyptus grandis above you with its smooth white trunk and beautiful arm-like branches reaching to the sky!

Its scientific name is derived from it being in the gum tree family “Eucalyptus” and it being so big “grandis”.

On your right, notice the mulched path entering the garden bed and take a stroll through. Look out for the striking Banksia serrata named after both the historic botanist Joseph Banks “Banksia” and the serrated teeth-like edges on its leaves “serrata”. It’s commonly known as Old Man Banksia due to the bushy beard-like appearance of the seed pods. Can you spot them?

Activity: Design a plant

As you walk collect up fallen natural treasures – leaves, twigs, cones from the ground.

Make sure to leave any living parts on plants and only pick up things that have fallen off onto the mulch.

With your found treasures create your own hybrid plant species on a nearby empty lawn space. Make it as crazy as you like and take a photo of your design. Can you give it a name based on the special plant features you have given it?

Before you leave, please help us keep our Garden tidy and place your natural treasures back in the garden area.
