Run one of the world’s most scenic marathon courses

The iconic Sydney Marathon, presented by ASICS, is back on Sunday 15 September 2024.

The Sydney Marathon is currently on the road to becoming the next Abbott World Marathon Major, with over 40,000 participants in total, and over 15,000 in the marathon expected to take on the iconic Sydney route.

Run one of the world’s most scenic marathon courses, taking in some of Sydney’s most spectacular and historic landmarks including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

There are three event distances that will be covered on the day, which will provide a truly memorable experience for all participants this year:

  • Sydney Marathon (42.2km) 
  • Sydney Marathon (10km)
  • Sydney Mini Marathon (4.2km) 

 

All events will cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Marathon will finish on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House whilst the 10km and 4.2km races finish at the Conservatorium of Music, the entrance to Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

One of the remaining legacy races from the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the event has raised over $23 million for charitable organisations since its inception, and welcomes thousands of international runners from over 66 countries.

What is the event?

The Sydney Marathon takes place on Sunday 15 September 2024. It is the highest profile legacy event following the 2000 Sydney Olympics. It incorporates three distances to encourage participation from beginners through to experienced athletes:

  • Sydney Marathon – 42.2km (wheelchair)
  • Sydney Marathon – 42.2km (run)
  • Sydney Marathon – 10km
  • Sydney Marathon – Mini 4.2km

The running route includes Art Gallery Road and Mrs Macquaries Road. Marathon runners will finish at the Sydney Opera House forecourt while 10km and Mini 4.2km runners will finish at the Conservatorium of Music, off Macquarie Street. All participants will make their way to Parade Grounds within the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

The Recovery Village in the Tarpeian Precinct (off Macquarie Street) in The Domain Sydney will operate from 7am – 3pm.

As the Marathon comes through The Domain, there will be some operational changes in place. These are detailed below. Road closures will also be in place in the wider CBD area and surrounding suburbs along the course. For more details for road closures visit www.livetraffic.com.

Which areas of The Domain/Botanic Garden are impacted by this event and when?

Venues within the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and The Domain are included in the Sydney Marathon event.

Tarpeian Precinct, Parade Ground, Bennelong Lawn, Lawn 60, Lawn 62 and Lawn 63 near Queen Elizabeth II Gate will be marked out and some sections will be temporarily closed off to the public for safety reasons. Pedestrian access will be maintained on pathways and where necessary an alternative route will be facilitated. Bump in will commence 7.00am on Tuesday 10 September 2024 and the site will be returned to public access 6pm on Tuesday 17 September 2024.

Mrs Macquaries Point, Yurong Precinct will be marked out and some sections will be temporarily closed off to the public for safety reasons. Bump in will commence on Saturday 14 September 2024 and the site will be returned to public access following the race on Sunday 15 September 2024.

The Marathon incorporates Art Gallery Road and Mrs Macquaries Road. These will have operational changes in place until 3pm on event day. Please see below for more details.

I am not attending the event, will I still be able to access The Domain/Botanic Garden on the event day/s?

On event day, Art Gallery Road and Mrs Macquaries Road will be closed from 4am – 3pm. Vehicles will not be able to enter until roads have reopened. There will be a special event clearway in place from midnight to 10am to ensure no vehicles park on Art Gallery Road, Mrs Macquaries Road and Hospital Road. Please do not park overnight on these roads. Vehicles parked within the road closure will be towed at the owner’s expense.

What will the traffic and access impacts be?

Road closures: External road closures and clearways are planned throughout the Sydney CBD. For the latest traffic information, visit www.livetraffic.com.

  • Art Gallery and Mrs Macquarie’s Roads Closed: Sunday 15 September 4am – 3pm
    • No parking will be permitted during these times and access is restricted to authorised event staff and suppliers with valid Staff ID and authorised vehicle access permit up to 5:30am. 
    • No vehicle access in or out of Art Gallery Road will be permitted after 5:30am.
    • Please note a clearway is in place from midnight – 10am on Art Gallery Road, Mrs Macquaries Road and Hospital Road to ensure vehicles do not park on these roads. Do not park overnight on these roads. Vehicles parked within the road closure will be towed at the owner’s expense.
  • Hospital Road: Sunday 15 September 4am – 3pm
    • Hospital Road: Two-way access to Hospital Road via Shakespeare Place in place from 4am – 3pm (via Sir John Young Crescent from the east). 
    • All Hospital Staff and suppliers requiring vehicle access to buildings on Hospital Road require company photo ID and authorised vehicle access permit to enter.
    • Please note a clearway is in place from midnight – 10am on Art Gallery Road, Mrs Macquaries Road and Hospital Road to ensure vehicles do not park on these roads. Do not park overnight on these roads. Vehicle parked within the road closure will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Public and Mobility Pass Holder parking restrictions/availability: Parking on Art Gallery Road and Mrs Macquaries Road will be available from 3pm on event day. Note: Access to the Domain Car Park is best via Sir John Young Crescent from the east.

Gate closures:

  • Queen Elizabeth II Gate and Opera House Gate will be closed from 7am – 3:30pm to facilitate the Marathon finish walk off zone. There will be no direct access between Sydney Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden Sydney via these Gates.
  • Government House Gate will be closed to public from 7am – 11:30am to facilitate the 10km and Mini 4.2km runner finish walk off zone.
  • During above gate closure times, please use Conservatorium Gate to enter and exit the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. All other Gates will be open as per normal operating hours.

Footpath closures:

  • Pedestrian access to the Royal Botanic Garden and The Domain will be maintained at all times and where necessary an alternative route will be facilitated. On the event day, there will be some necessary traffic and access restrictions in place for safety reasons.
  • The Art Gallery to Domain pedestrian crossing will be closed between 7:05am – 1:05pm during the peak period when runners are on course. Volunteer marshals and security will be in place to help guide pedestrians to designated crossing points along the course.

Will there be any sound impacts related to this event?

There is event sound with music along the running route at Mrs Macquaries Point and near the Andrew Boy Charlton Pool from 7am – 1:30pm. This is localised sound directed at event runners on the course.

The Recovery Village in the Tarpeian Precinct, Bennelong Lawn and Lawn 60 will each have one small stage. Ancillary speakers will be located at the finish lines.

Sound checks are conducted on Saturday 14 September from 10am – 12pm and event sound from 7am – 3pm.
